April is Child Abuse Prevention Month

Child abuse is a national tragedy affecting more than three million children annually and causing the deaths of three children every day. Preventing and reporting child abuse is one of the most important things a community can do for the future of its children. Franklin County Children Services receives more than 9,000 reports of child abuse each year and serves more than 24,500 children and their families.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention month and a time to raise awareness of the importance of keeping children safe. During April, Franklin County Children Services participated in the Pinwheels for Prevention public awareness campaign. Each pinwheel represents an allegation of abuse/neglect reported to FCCS. The Village Network-Columbus joined 22 other community partners in planting pinwheels during the month of April.

TVN's Treatment Foster Care programs are developed as local programs and address the special and unique needs of the community according to Sprague. The programs combine the best elements of traditional foster care with innovative therapeutic parenting techniques. TVN treatment foster parents receive the full support of The Village Network. In addition to specialized, expanded training, there are weekly team meetings and 24/7 on-call support. TVN Columbus Partners with FCCS in Community-Based Foster Care
A partnership with Franklin County Children Services (FCCS) will expand the county's community-based foster care program. TVN-Columbus will combine concepts from Hull House Association Neighbor to Neighbor Program and TVN's own model of Treatment Foster Care. The purpose of the community-based program is to keep siblings together in stable foster care while working with the entire family to achieve permanent arrangements. The key is minimizing disruption to their daily life by keeping the children inside the same community and linking both the biological and foster families to local services.
TVN-Columbus will work closely with the settlement houses currently located inside Franklin County. The partnership will keep family visitations inside the neighborhood helping eliminate transportation challenges and encouraging regular visits. It will also provide a community training site for new foster homes. For information on how to become a foster parent inside this new model contact Traci McCarty at 614-751-9068.
